PRESIDENT Goodluck Jonathan, yesterday, submitted to the Senate for approval name of his former Senior Special Assistant on Diaspora Affairs and wife of late Dim Odimegwu Chukwuemeka Ojukwu, Mrs Bianca Ojukwu, as an ambassadorial nominee.
President Jonathan in a letter to Senate President, David Mark, requested that in line with section 171(1) C, sub-section 4 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended, the Senate should consider a list of thirty-two as non-career and fifty-six as career ambassadorial nominees, adding, “it is my hope that this exercise will receive the usual kind expeditious attention of the Distinguished Members of the
Senate of the Federal Republic.”
The appointment of the former most beautiful girl in Nigeria which the President put as belonging to the special category is coming barely a week after her husband, Chief Ojukwu died in a London Hospital.
Also on the list of those submitted to the Senate for consideration as ambassadors were former national secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and ex-Foreign Affairs Minister, Chief Ojo Madueke for Abia State; the financial secretary of PDP, Alhaji Tukur Mani from Katsina State; permanent secretary of the Federal Capital Territory Administration, FCTA, Biodun Nathaniel Olorunfemi from Kogi State; and former Minister of Aviation, Mrs Fidelia Akuabata Njeze from Enugu State.

Also named as ambassadorial nominees are former deputy governor of Oyo State; Taofik Arapaja, former commissioner for women affairs, Edo State, Mrs Sifawu Inu-Umoru Momoh; Nigerian Ambassador to the Gambia, Mrs Esther John Audu representing the Federal Capital Territory; Senator Lawan Gana Guba from Yobe; Abubakar Shehu Bunu for Zamfara State; Nigerian Ambassador to the kingdom of Morocco, Senator Abdalah Wali for Sokoto State; Senator Haruna Garba representing Gombe State and Adamu Babangida Ibrahim another nominee from Katsina State.

For the career nominees, Abia, Ekiti, Anambra, Akwa Ibom, Enugu, Kebbi; Nasarawa, Oyo; Sokoto; Taraba; Imo, and Zamfara states have a nominee each while Adamawa got two with another name, Mrs Hadiza Mustapha, under gender the slot as ambassadorial nominee. Security: Senate
assures Foreign Missions of safety
Meanwhile Senate President David Mark has assured foreign missions in Nigeria of their safety. He said the Federal Government has put in place measures to check the menace of security threat.
Speaking while receiving the German Ambassador to Nigeria, Dorothee Janetzke-Wenzel in his office, Senator Mark declared that the Senate was resolute on the law passed on same sex marriage in spite of threat by foreign nations to withdraw assistance to Nigeria on account of that law.
He said: “There is no need to panic or contemplate leaving Nigeria on account of security. We are doing our best to contain the situation. Recent events have shown that we are capable of handling the situation. I can say without fear of contradiction that our efforts are yielding results in dealing with the security situation, so there is no need for anybody or mission to contemplate leaving Nigeria, we shall overcome.”
On the law passed Mark said: “It is unfair to tie whatever assistance or aide to Nigeria to the laws we make in the overall interest of our citizens otherwise we are tempted to believe that such assistance comes with ulterior motives. If the assistance is aimed at mortgaging our future, values, custom and ways of life, then they should as well keep their assistance.”
Earlier, the German Ambassador to Nigeria, Dorothee Janetzke-Wenzel requested for stronger economic ties with Nigeria in order to boost the economy of both nations. Janetzke-Wenzel said Europe that was hitherto ravaged by wars has now become a haven for peace, economic and political cooperation for the good of all.
