Lionel Messi and Dad may face 6 years in prison if found guilty of £3.4million tax fraud

Four times FIFA footballer of the year and Barcelona FC playmaker Lionel Messi has been accused of tax fraud to the tune of £3.4million. And reports in Spain suggest the Barcelona superstar could face up to six years in jail if he is found guilty.

A lawsuit was lodged against the Barcelona forward and his father by a state prosecutor for the north eastern region of Catalonia.

The complaint has been submitted for trial in Gava, the upscale Barcelona district where the 25-year-old lives.

Both Messi and his father, Jorge Horacio, are accused of three offences against the public purse for allegedly defrauding more than £3.4m in income tax returns relating to the years 2007, 2008 and 2009.

A judge at the courthouse must accept the prosecutor's lawsuit before charges can be brought.

Spanish news agency EFE are reporting that Messi could face up to six years in jail and a large fine if convicted.

Barcelona declined to comment on the lawsuit while Messi expressed his surprise.

He said: 'We have just known through the media about the claim filed by the Spanish tax authorities. We are surprised about those news, because we have never committed any infringement.

'We have always fulfilled all our tax obligations, following the advices of our Tax Consultants who will take care of clarifying this situation.'

Messi is enjoying a day off after playing for his national team in Quito, where Argentina was held to 1-1 by Ecuador in a qualifying match for the World Cup.

Argentina coach Alejandro Sabella has said Messi was expected to be included in the lineup for a friendly against Guatemala on Friday.

Students Riot as Police Gun-down three student at University of Uyo over 100 naira transport increment

The Engineering students of the University of Uyo yesterday afternoon went for a peaceful demonstration to the office of the school's Vice Chancellor, Prof Comfort Ekpo, after the VC mandated students to pay N100 for the school bus which used to be free. The school management had shifted most of the Science student courses to the school's permanent site which is about 20 minutes drive from the main campus, and then made the shuttle N100. That means students will have to pay N200 to and fro everyday to the permanent campus for most of their lectures.

This was what the students were protesting this afternoon when things went crazy. The peaceful protest turned violent after security officials at the V.C's office tried to stop the students from gaining access to the Vice Chancellor.

The students allegedly retaliated by throwing stones at the security officials, who then called for police back-up which led to the riot. The police arrived the scene and aggravated the situation by firing shots at the students, killing three of the students.

Angry students now proceeded to burn down the VC's office, the exams and records building, and a security office. Students have been evacuated from the hostel, and the school has been shut down indefinitely.

See the world most expensive dress valued at $17.7 million

The dazzling dress is encrusted with 2000 stones in total including the star of the show: the world's rarest and most expensive red diamond.

The Abaya created by British designer Debbie Wingham may be attracting masses of attention because of its £11.7m price tag.

Debbie first made her mark on the fashion world when she unveiled a £3.5m black dress encrusted with 50 two carat black diamonds that weighed a hefty 29lbs (13kg) last year.

Her latest creation may be a simple abaya design (a loose over-garment, essentially a robe-like dress, worn by some women in parts of the Islamic world including in North Africa and the Arabian Peninsul) but the extravagant design and detailing makes it the most expensive item to ever go on sale.

At the centre of the dress dazzles the world's rarest and most expensive diamond.

One in every hundred million diamonds is a natural red colour and they are found on average every 50 years but generally too small to speak of, so this is something quite special.

The individual diamond has a value of £4.89m.
