HAPPY NEW YEAR

WANNA WISH NAIJA BIFF READERS A HAPPY NEW YEAR.....

Paw-Paw finds love too?

Some newspapers were agog with the recent marriage of Chinedu Ikedieze, aka, Aki  but that news is already becoming stale. The most current gist now is that Osite Iheme, aka,  Paw Paw, like his friend Aki has equally found love or so it seems.

The reported romance however did not reveal the identity of the lucky lady but Paw-Paw was quoted to have admitted being in a serious relationship.

Paw-Paw who was recently honoured by the Federal Government with a national honour has a knack for following closely the foot-steps of his screen ‘twin-brother’ Aki who was the first amongst the duo to receive  a national honour  and also the first to find love.

The duo are reputed for their mischievour roles in movies and they are said to have acted in over 80 movies. Osita, Paw-Paw Iheme and Chinedu Aki Ikedieze are said to be doing very well materially.

Deaconess Clarion Chukwurah?
Screen goddess Clarion Chukwurah was rumoured  to have been ordained a Deaconess at Jesus Dominion Assembly, Omole Phase 1, Ikeja Lagos. The rumour mills said she was ordained alongside her other colleagues in the Assembly.

The new title of  the star actress, we gathered was given to her, based on the fact that the actress  is now born again and has been evangelizing. But busy-bodies think it is just a publicity gimmick for the church.

Clarion is known to have married several times but none of her marriages worked. A new gist about her is that she was caught with her former beau and father of her first son  Shina Peters in a cozy atmosphere at an event but it wasn’t clear what was being insinuated. Grapevine never stated they are back together.

But the latest gist making the rounds is her ordination  during which  the ordination pastor  was said to have advised Clarion to desist from her ungodly activities and every appearance of evil.

Rumour mills quoted   her pastor as saying; ‘Clarion, you are now a new creation in the Lord, go away from your unholy ways”.

But another gist master has wondered whether Clarion was not properly born-again for her pastor to be advising her thus.

Bukky Wright re-marries!
Star actress Bukky Wright is again in the news. After swearing to commit the rest of her life  taking care of her kids, Bukky is being rumoured to have recently married a U.S Big Boy. Matinee cannot confirm the truth of this as the actress is not picking her calls but  those who claim  they are in the know said  her new husband  is a US-based guy by name Wale  who lives in New Jersey and has a thriving business in the country.

According to recent reports, Wale’s marriage to Bukky Wright took place at the City of Trenton Registry in New Jersey in June 2011 and was   presided over by the resident judge and witnessed by Wale’s friends . Some of Bukky’s female friends and family members are said to have witnessed the exchange of vows.

Further  account on the marriage  claims  that Bukky now has a residency permit in the US with her two sons, OJ and OS, who are currently living with their step-father.

The  account also alleges that her new hubby has taken over the upkeep of her children and he is now sponsoring their education.

The  new hubby was said to have lost his first wife to cancer , leaving him with four children made up of three boys and a girl.

Genevieve, Akon, Osaze Odemwinge, now brand ambassadors!
Screengoddess Genevieve Nnaji, Nigeria’s version of America’s  Julia Roberts  and the award winning multi Grammy nominee and platinum singer, Akon as well as star footballer, Osaze Odemwinge have reportedly been named the brand ambassadors of  a new international beverage brand that was launched in Nigeria  recently.

The brand is said to have originated in the USA before proceeding to  South Africa and now Nigeria. It   offers a range of beverages.

Karen Igho tweets for a husband
BBA’s Karen Igho and famous winner  tweeted recently and guess what?  She wants something nice from Santa Claus this yuletide season and her request will blow your mind!  For being a good girl this year, Karen is requesting for some goodies; goodies as in  a boyfriend or husband!

Eedris Abdulkareem Beats Up Singer Jaywon Juwonlo Into Coma

As you read this, gbon gbon gbon crooner, Jaywon was beaten up by his label mate, though senior, Edris Abdulkareem yesterday at satellite town carnival. Though no one could actually tell what brought about the fight, but a lot of people who knows both parties say Edris has been beefing Jaywon because of his fast success. He alongside his thugs beat up the young singer (jaywon), and since he couldn’t over power them, he was seriously injured. I hear he is presently hospitalized.

President Jonathan Declares State of Emergency in Parts of Nigeria

President Goodluck Jonathan has just issued a proclamation declaring a state of emergency in certain parts of Nigeria. The proclamation below...
Fellow Nigerians, it has become necessary to address you on recent events in some parts of the country that have threatened our collective security and shaken the foundations of our corporate existence as a nation.
You are all aware of the security challenges which the activities of the Boko Haram sect have foisted on the country. What began as sectarian crises in the North Eastern parts of the country has gradually evolved into terrorist activities in different parts of the country with attendant negative consequences on our national security.
Will declaring a state of emergency stop the bombings and killings? #Justasking. Continue reading...

3.      Government in an effort to find a lasting solution to the security threats occasioned by the activities of the Boko Haram sect, constituted a Presidential Committee under the Chairmanship of Ambassador Usman Gaji Galtimari, to ascertain the immediate and remote causes of the crises. While efforts are being made to implement the recommendations of the Committee, the crises have assumed a terrorist dimension with vital institutions of government including the United Nations Building and places of worship becoming targets of terrorist attacks.

4.   While the search for lasting solutions is ongoing, it has become imperative to take some decisive measures necessary to restore normalcy in the country especially within the affected communities. Consequently, I have in the exercise of the powers conferred on me by the provisions of section 305(1) of the Constitution, declared a state of emergency in the following parts of the federation, namely:

(i)  Borno State
a)  Maidugiri Metropolitan LGA
b)  Gamboru Ngala LGA
c)   Banki Bama LGA
d)  Biu LGA
e)   Jere LGA
(ii)  Yobe State
a)  Damaturu LGA
b)  Geidam LGA
c)   Potiskum LGA
d)  Buniyadi-Gujba LGA
e)   Gasua-Bade LGA
    (iii) Plateau State
a)  Jos North LGA
b)  Jos South LGA
c)   Barkin-Ladi LGA
d)  Riyom LGA
   (iv) Niger State
a)  Suleja LGA

The details of this proclamation will be transmitted to the National Assembly as soon as they reconvene from their current recess, for their necessary action.

5.    The Chief of Defence Staff and the Inspector-General of Police have been directed to put appropriate measures in place to ensure the protection of lives and properties of residents in the affected parts of the country. I therefore urge the political leadership in the affected states and Local Government Areas to give maximum cooperation to the law enforcement agencies deployed to their respective communities to ensure that the situation is brought under control within the shortest possible time.

6.   The Chief of Defence Staff, in collaboration with other Service Chiefs, has also been directed to set up a special force unit within the Armed Forces, with dedicated counter terrorism responsibilities.

7.   As part of the overall strategy to overcome the current security challenges, I have directed the closure of the land borders contiguous to the affected Local Government Areas so as to control incidences of cross boarder terrorist activities as terrorists have taken advantage of the present situation to strike at targets in Nigeria and retreat beyond the reach of our law enforcement personnel.

8.  Let me assure our neighbours, especially within the ECOWAS sub-region, of Nigeria’s commitment to its international obligations as provided by the ECOWAS Protocol on Free Movement of Persons. The temporary closure of our borders in the affected areas is only an interim measure designed to address the current security challenges and will be reviewed as soon as normalcy is restored.

9.   I commend the efforts of our political leaders at various levels as well as our traditional and religious leaders for their support for the various conflict resolution mechanisms and peace building measures that have been initiated by this administration. We call on the citizenry to continue to provide useful information to our law enforcement agencies to enable us arrest the situation.

10. Terrorism is a war against all of us. I call on all Nigerians to join hands with government to fight these terrorists.

11. I wish all Nigerians a very happy New Year.

12.   Long Live the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Police, robbers in gun battle in Warri

A gang of armed robbers, dressed in camouflage army uniform, which has been terrorizing the residents of Warri and environs in Delta State, weekend, opened fire on policemen at Effurun in Delta State, injuring a policeman at the end of the gun battle.

A source told Vanguard that the bandits were responsible for the killing of a couple and their sales girl at a jewelry shop in Warri, penultimate week, though two of them were later killed by security agents.

On Friday, the robbers, armed with AK 47 and other sophisticated rifles engaged the policemen in a shootout as soon as they sighted them in their bid to scare the security agents.

In the ensuing crossfire, a policeman was injured, but the bandits abandoned their vehicle and made good their escape.

Delta state police spokesman, Mr. Charles Muka, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, ASP, who confirmed the incident told Vanguard, today, that the robbers deliberately opened fire on the policemen when they saw them.

Contrary to the report that a policeman was killed, he said, “That is not true, a policeman was injured, but the robbers abandoned their vehicle and escaped through the creek”.

However, most residents in Warri have been complaining of incessant attacks by bandits in recent times.

Coordinator of the Forum for Justice and Human Rights Defence, Oghenejabor Ikimi Esq. told Vangaurd , “The spate of armed robbery and other criminal activities in Warri and neighbouring communities in recent times have become alarming”.

He urged the Delta State Government and the Commissioner of Police in the state to rise up to their responsibility to the people, as the government owes it as duty to the people to provide them security.

Meanwhile, some concerned citizens in the state have urged the police to stop collecting money from motorcyclists arrested from flouting the restriction order on movement of motorcycles after 7.00 pm in Warri and environs.

Some of the citizens who spoke to Sunday Vanguard said the order restricting movement of motorcycles after 7.00 pm because criminals were using it as a means to ferry their arms was a good directive, but the police should not collect money from offenders and release them.

Police humiliates Sunny Neji, undresses him in public @ gunpoint’

Popular pop highlife star and Oruka crooner Sunny Neji, is a man in pain. He is so angry at the humiliation meted out to him by men of the Nigerian Police Force that he decided to twit and share his experience on Facebook.

Following his post published herein, our reporter MUKOSOLU NZOM had a brief chat with the Ogoja, Cross River State born star.

Excerpt: I saw what you up loaded just now, what happened?

*Sunny Neji
Some policemen in uniform stopped me and started searching me as if I was a criminal.

And where did this happen?

It happened around the toll gate axis on Lagos Ibadan express way by 7-UP area, between 10 and 11 of that faithful morning. The officer in-charge of the team was one Inspector Katsina…and they were driving a convoy Hilux truck

How did it happen?

I was asked to stop and I did. And they started treating me as if I was already guilty of something. The inspector kept ranting about how they’ll deal with me if they found anything incriminating in my car. They searched the whole car and made me remove my shoes and my jacket. I  wondered at their effrontery and what they were looking for.

They even went as far as asking for my Special Marshal I.D card.  They just kept talking as if they were sure there was something in my car.

They turned my car inside out….I did not mind the searching but all the threats they were making as if they were so sure I was guilty even before finding any evidence made me uncomfortable

I think the Police can do better than what they did to me.

Don’t  you think they did that because they  wanted you to part with some money?

They intentionally did what they did because they wanted to embarrass me. I’m sure my name is not very strange to them.

And after the search, were you allowed to go?

They had to leave me now abi …….since they did not find anything. I’m not a criminal, it was pure police harassment

Worried that the same situation may arise next time,  Nneji told Sunday Entertainment, that he decided to visit the station (Area H in Ogudu.)where the team works and this is what he said transpired.

”I decided to visit the area command where those officers came from to report the incident…”

“My peeps!!!!! No be small tin o….na so I go station this morning go sit down face to face wit the officers wey harass me the other day. They come dey beg dey apologize. The transformation was incredible. The 2IC ask me Wetin I want make dem do to dem….I look dem finish and I come begin sorry for dem. I say make dem just caution dem…. E go better!!!”.

15 injured in Gombe hotel bomb blast

No fewer than 15 persons were injured in an explosion at a hotel located on the outskirts of Gombe. The attack occured on Wednesday night and came after a series of bombings on Christmas, Day, which killed at least 40 persons in Suleja, Jos and Damaturu. The Manager of the hotel, Mr. Ojiego Nelson, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Gombe on Thursday that three persons came to the hotel at about 10.13pm on Wednesday to explode a device.Nelson said he was at the gate of the hotel when the men, who were carrying guns, started "manhandling" the security man.

He said, "When he asked what was happening, they started shooting sporadically."Our customers and everybody started running helter-skelter and the one with two gas cylinders in his hands threw them into our reception."He threw one into the reception and threw the other one under the cars parked by our guests in the hotel."The one thrown into the reception exploded and damaged the building, so we just managed to escape through the back fence."The manager said as soon as the incident happened, all the customers vacated their rooms in the hotel. He said the incident was immediately reported to the Divisional Police Officer in Tumfure, Mr Hassan Bappa, who came to the scene with his men.

Bappa told NAN he moved his men to the scene of the incident when the matter was reported to him, but said the gunmen had escaped before the police arrived. Bappa said there was no casuality and nothing was stolen from the hotel. "We are waiting for bomb experts to come and remove the relics at the scene of the incident," he said. He said there was no arrest made so far but investigations were going on. Meanwhile, the Chairman, Senate Committee on Petroleum (Downstream), Senator Magus Abe, on Thursday in Lagos called for political support for security agencies to reduce the spate of bombings in the country. Abe (PDP-Rivers South-East) made the call in an interview with the NAN, urging the security agencies to be persistent in handling the incessant bombings by the fundamentalist Boko Haramsect.

He said, "The security agencies need full political support of the leadership of the country and the communities; besides, they need to be focused, consistent and avoid distractions. "The Boko Haram issue is a challenge that must be overcome. Take for instance, there was a time in Israel when bombs were going on everyday but today they have overcome it.’’ The senator advised the country’s leadership to be courageous in handling the present security challenges facing the nation. "The Boko Haram issue requires leadership and total courage, courage on the part of the leadership and the leadership must adopt the consistency approach," he said

FG to spend N11.25bn on foreign trips in 2012

Ministries, departments and agencies of the Federal Government will spend a whopping N11.25bn on international travels in 2012.

The amount is contained in the 2012 budget proposal presented to the National Assembly by President Goodluck Jonathan.

Analysis of the travel expenditure of the government shows that the Ministry of Defence with all its agencies has the largest allocation of N4.14bn.

The agencies under defence include, Defence Headquarters with a N79.5m travel budget; Ministry of Defence, 114.9m; Nigerian Army, N335.6m; Navy, N413.3m; Air Force, N1.7bn; NDA, N84.7m; Defence College, N50.2m; DIA, N447.5m; DIS, N447.5m; and Defence Missions, N470m.

The allocation to defence is closely followed by that of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which has the sum of N3.31bn.

The Presidency wants N951m for foreign travels, while the Finance ministry will spend N287m on foreign travels at, a little more than the budget of the Education ministry’s N283.4m.

Others who also got large allocations for their trips abroad for the new year  are the Ministry of Petroleum, N155m; Justice, N122m; and Trade and Investment, N109m.

A further breakdown of the allocation shows that selected police officers would have N229m for their travels abroad. The Ministry of Police Affairs gets NN48.5m; Youth, N24.2m; Women Affairs, N60.5mi Agriculture, N34m; and Water Resources, N49.9m.

The Office of the Auditor General of the Federation has N89m allocated to it; the Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission has N78million; Information and National Orientation, N63.3m;Communications Technology; N44.3m; Interior, N10m; Head of Service, N92.1m Science and Technology, N82m; Labour and Productivity, N74.9m; Power, N71.8m; Transport, N120mi and Works, N59million.

Other agencies benefiting from the foreign trip  largesse are the Ministry of Lands and Housing, N54.8million; Mines and Steel, N58milllion; Aviation, N45.8m; Salaries and Wages, N19.8m; Environment,  N53.2m; Culture,  N80.8m; National Planning, N81.7m; NPC, N13.9m; and Code of Conduct Bureau, N24.87m.

The rest are Code of Conduct Tribunal, N12.2m; Public Complaints Commission, N34.3m; Revenue Mobilisation, N89m; Federal Civil Service, N62.9m; and Federal Character Commission, N49m.

In her reaction to the budget, the President of the Campaign for Democracy, Dr. Joe Okei-Odumakin, called on the government to stop wasting taxpayers’ money.

In a telephone interview with one of our correspondents, Okei-Odumakin warned the Jonathan administration to get its priorities right.

“Whatever they do today, they must be held accoutable one day. We are not in any- way in support of any frivolity,” she added.

Okei-Odumakin stated, “Voting such a huge amount of money on foreign travels, in spite of the glaring problems we are facing, is highly insensitive.

“What are they going to look for? They are looking for investment? Europe is in turmoil. America has its own problems. Why can’t we spend the money to meet the needs of Nigerians, instead of travelling with a retinue of aides and embarking on frivolous trips?”

Also, academic and lawyer, Prof. Itse Sagay, SAN, described the budget as “wasteful and reckless.” He also said the presidency’s action amounted to irresponsibility.
Sagay expressed concerns that the country would never grow if the government continued to waste scarce resources on frivolous ventures.

Speaking to one of our correspondents on the telephone, he said, “That obviously is wasteful and reckless. We are talking of a country where the budget for capital projects is just about 27 per cent, while recurrent expenditure is more than 70 per cent.

“It is a sign of irresponsibility –  that means Nigeria will never grow. They (government) are the ones spoiling the economy. All this money spent on entertainment and other unproductive ventures is wasted money.”

Meanwhile, the presidential candidate of the Congress for Progressive Change, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) has called  for  the suspension of foreign trips, as a means of reducing the cost of governance.
At a press conference after the Supreme Court affirmed that President Goodluck Jonathan won the April presidential poll, Buhari said, “Government House expenses in all the states should be drastically reduced and foreign travel suspended for a while. The National Assembly should give a lead in reducing their allowances substantially and stopping their foreign travels.”

According to him, “These savings should be applied to education, infrastructure and agriculture with emphasis on youth employment through meaningful and practical emergency programmes.”

Although the Federal Government has promised that it will cut down overheads, the amount for foreign travels contradicts the government’s statement on the need to reduce waste.

President of the Senate David Mark had noted that the National Assembly would take the lead in reducing its overheads, praying that the executive would do the same.

The Senate and the House of Representatives had separately expressed displeasure over the amount earmarked for recurrent expenditure in 2012, vowing to cut down.

The budget has been read a second time and has been committed to committees for further legislative work.

34 died, 62 wounded in Madalla bombing –Health Minister

The Federal Government on Wednesday in Abuja finally admitted an increase in the number of victims affected by the Christmas Day explosion at the St. Theresa Catholic Church in Madalla, Suleja, Niger State which it put at 96.

The Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, said this while fielding questions from journalists after visiting victims in the hospitals to ascertain their conditions.

The hospitals visited were the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, Gwagwalada; National Hospital, Abuja and State House Clinic, Abuja.
Chukwu said out of the 96 victims, a total of 34 victims had been confirmed dead from the incidents.
He also said that a committee had been set up to give psychological support for the surviving victims and their relatives and also to help towards identifying the yet to be identified dead bodies.

He said, “I have discussed with the management of National Hospital and a small committee have been set up to provide support one for the relatives of those who survived. There is need for psychological support for them as being done now. It is very important, counselling and so on. And also for the identification of some of the bodies, not all the bodies have been identified so far. But we understand that will be done in time. The committee is in place too to be able to do that smoothly.”

The minister promised that the Federal Government would settle all the medical bills of the victims of the bomb blasts.

He advised all the remaining victims in the private hospitals to move to government owned-hospitals.
Speaking at the State House Clinic, he said, “The figures we have at the Federal Ministry of Health are the figures that have been gathered by the Rapid Medical Emergency Response team of the Federal Ministry of

Health is that so far we have been able to identify 96 victims of that blast out of which 34 have been confirmed dead.

“This hospital initially took four patients. One has left the hospital with minor injury and another one was transferred to the National Hospital and the remaining two have fractures and today they are looking better. Only two patients are remaining at the Suleja General Hospital. The Federal Government is going to take care of their bills.”

After going round the wards at the National Hospital, he said, “We are at the National Hospital and initially they brought in 29 victims. But when some other smaller hospitals started transferring, they got altogether 37 patients from the incident. Out of the 37 patients, 24 have now been discharged to be coming from home to the hospital as outpatients while 13 are presently on admission.

“I have seen almost all the patients apart from those who have gone to the radiological department. They are undergoing further examinations there. I have seen those on their beds, some of them with head injuries. I have discussed with the management on plans for their further treatments and I am impressed with the plan they have.

“Many of them are doing well and they are even getting better. There were dead bodies that were brought in. Presently altogether we have 23 corpses in the mortuary at the National Hospital. 21 of them are complete while the remaining two are incomplete.”

At the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, Gwagwalada, the minister said, “The patients are doing well. One was brought in here dead on that Christmas day. For the rest of the patients, they have lost one who had a major head injury.”

Patients desert LUTH as strike persists

The last appears not to have been heard about the on-going health workers’ strike which has shut down essential healthcare services at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, LUTH,Idi-Araba.

With no apparent end in sight, persons seeking treatment are being forced to look elsewhere other than the tertiary health institution even as in-patients have been compulsorily discharged from the wards as the striking medical and health workers vowed not to return to work.

Currently, only the set of quintuplets born a couple of weeks ago at the health institution are still on admission at the Intensive Care Unit, ICU.

This development emerged as a result of special arrangement by the hospital authorities to ensure  the babies, who were born with low birth weight, continue to receive the required care.

When Vanguard visited the hospital yesterday, it was a shadow of itself as only a handful of patients were seen scattered in some of the major wards as most of the others had been sent home.

Some of the patients encountered in the wards lamented their plight. Several of them who had run out of funds said they were stranded and could not go home or move to other hospitals. A few others who were lucky had their relations around to attend to their needs.

However, sources from the LUTH Joint House Unions and Associations told Vanguard that the strike would continue until their demands are addressed and satisfactorily met.

According to the source, the health workers are insisting that, among all the demands, the issue of downgrading and demotion must be reversed before they would return to work; immediate withdrawal of all the letters issued to members, and that the status quo to remain, which is skipping of CONHESS 10 in order to maintain industrial harmony.

Chief Medical Director of the health institution, Prof. Akin Osibogun had earlier appealed to the workers to call off the strike in the interest of the patients as negotiations continued.
