N2b Suit Against Oyedepo For Hearing May 2nd

The N2 billion suit instituted against the founder of the Living Faith Christian Church International, Bishop David Oyedepo, for slapping a young lady in his church would be heard at the Ogun State High Court on 2 May, reports Premium Times.

Robert Igbinedion, the lawyer who filed the suit on behalf of the young lady, two weeks ago, is seeking the court to award N2 billion as ‘general and exemplary damages’ against the flamboyant pastor.
Mr. Oyedepo was named the richest pastor in Nigeria last year by Forbes magazine with an estimated worth of over N20 billion.

Mr. Igbinedion says he intends to launch a barrage of petitions against the bishop “to stop him until investigations are over so he will not escape.”

“To let him know we are serious, I’m going to send a petition to the Ogun State Commissioner of Police on Monday (today) to investigate the assault,” Mr. Igbinedion told Premium Times over the phone, on Saturday.

“I’m also going to send copies of the petition to the American Embassy, the UK, and the EU to stop him from coming into their countries until the police clear him,” he added.

Bishop Oyedepo had allegedly slapped a young lady during his church programme, an action some worshippers argued was to exorcise the demon in the lady who claimed to be “a witch for Jesus”.
The video clip of the incident went viral as it was circulated on social networking sites on the internet. It was greeted with outrage and condemnation of the bishop’s action.

Boko Haram Bomb Police Boss’ Convoy As Over 10 People Dies

A suicide bomber on auto-bike, believed to be a member of the Boko Haram sect rammed into the convoy of the Commissioner of Police in Jalingo early today, killing at least two civilians, including himself.

•Okada riders killed this morning during the Jalingo bomb blast. Photo: Ben Adaji.

But the police officer escaped unharmed.
Some accounts said no fewer than 10 people died, but there was no official confirmation of the figure.

The explosion, which injured many people, resonated around the usually calm town, which is the capital of the north eastern state of Taraba.

An eyewitness told P.M.NEWS that the bomb explosion occurred at the Government House roundabout when the suicide bomber rammed into the convoy of the state Commissioner of Police, Alhaji Sule Mamani, who was passing through the area to his office at about 9 a.m.

As at press time, doctors, nurses and other medical personnel at Federal Medical Centre, Jalingo were working feverishly to save the lives of the injured victims.
The explosion, which is the first since the incident of Boko Haram bombings in many parts of the North forced the residents of Jalingo to run helter skelter.

Security operatives comprising the army and police have been moved to the scene of the bombing and investigation has commenced into the incident.

While the commissioner of police and his convoy escaped narrowly the bomb attack, his official vehicle, a new model of BMW car, in which he was driving, was badly damaged and his pilot rider was badly injured and he is one of the victims receiving treatment in the hospital.

Taraba’s police authorities confirmed three persons dead. Spokesman, Ibiang Mbaseki told AFP: “the bomber died with two others, who were passersby”. Meanwhile, to commiserate with the families of victims who lost their lives when Bayero University, BUK, Kano, Kano State, Northwest Nigeria, was bombed yesterday, authorities of the University have declared today as a day of mourning.

P.M.NEWS gathered that today has been declared lecture-free-day by BUK authorities. Non-academic staff will also observe it.

A power bike belonging to a police escort hit by the blast.

The spokesman of BUK, Mustapha Zahradeen confirmed this morning to our correspondent the position of the university.

He said the institution will be mourning throughout the day and as such there will be no lectures or work.
The corpse of Professor Andrew Leo Ogbonyomi, an indigene of Kogi State who died in the bomb attack is still in the mortuary. His colleague, Professor Jerome Ayodele Faniyi from Ekiti State is alive but was injured during the explosion.

Yesterday morning, 16 persons including Prof. Leo Ogbonyemi were killed while Christians were worshipping at a lecture theatre at Bayero University, Kano.

Several people were injured and were later rushed to the hospital.
The Christians were first attacked with gunshots which was followed by Improvised Explosive Device, IED, which was thrown into the hall by unknown assailants believed to be members of Boko Haram.

The victims included lecturers, students, non-academic staff of BUK and worshippers.
In another attack, Nigerian Islamist sect Boko Haram killed four people at a Sunday church service in the northeast town of Maiduguri, police said on Monday, adding to the death toll from a separate shooting in the country’s second largest city Kano.

Gunmen killed at least 15 people and wounded many more at a Christian service in Kano on Sunday, the latest round of violence which has seen hundreds killed in the mostly-Muslim north of Nigeria this year.
No group took responsibility for either attack and it was not clear if they were coordinated. But both strikes bore the hallmarks of the Boko Haram sect, which has used bomb and gun attacks in its push to carve out an Islamic state in Africa’s most populous nation.

“Boko Haram who were six in number came in a Volkswagen Golf car and shot the pastor and three others while they were about to administer the Holy Communion to worshippers,” Maiduguri police spokesman Samuel Tizhe said.

Maiduguri is the capital of northeast Borno state, Boko Haram’s home region and the location of the
majority of its attacks, which mostly target the police and military but have also hit churches and drinking spots.

In the attack in Kano on Sunday, gunmen arrived on motorbikes at a university lecture theatre used for Christian services and threw small homemade bombs into the building before shooting fleeing worshippers. nL5E8FT05E
“President Goodluck Jonathan condemns the murderous terrorist attack on the Bayero University Campus in Kano yesterday and the brutal killing of innocent worshippers at the University by vicious assailants,” a presidency statement said.

Jonathan has been criticized by Nigerians and foreign diplomats for failing to get a grip on the sect’s wave of violence, which has gained momentum since his presidential election victory a year ago.
Most of Boko Haram’s attacks focus on authority figures it believes have wronged the group by arresting or killing its members.

Nigeria’s more than 160 million population is split roughly equally between a largely Christian south and a mostly Muslim north.

Man Kill Girlfriend Over Abortion Money

A young man identified as Jim Zaccheus, a  27-year old security guard who allegedly killed his girlfriend, Miss Peace Mathias and buried her corpse in shallow grave in his room at Elechi Beach Waterfront, Mile One, Diobu in Port Harcourt Nigeria,  he said he killed her over abortion money and blamed the devil for his action.

Zaccheus was arraigned before Mrs. D.N. Wanjoku, who ordered that he should be remanded in prison custody for lack of jurisdiction of the Magistrate’s Court to adjudicate on matter.
The magistrate said since the court lacked the legal powers to hear the case, the suspect could approach the High Court for bail. She subsequently adjourned the case till 30 May for the Director of Public Prosecution, DPP’s advice on the case.

Sources said the suspect had told his interrogators that trouble started when he could not provide an undisclosed amount of money to procure an abortion of her deceased girlfriend’s three-month old pregnancy.

According to police sources, Zaccheus allegedly confessed that when he court provide the needed funds for the abortion, his deceased lover decided to procure a loan which he would pay later.
However, the suspect reneged on his promise after the abortion was procured successfully by the late girlfriend. But the late lover visited his house at Elechi Beach demand the refund of at least a part of the total money spent on abortion.

He allegedly said in his statement to the police that all attempts to persuade his deceased girlfriend to see reason that he was yet to receive his first salary from the security company where he worked fell on deaf ears.

He said “a quarrel ensued and it resulted in a brawl which made me push her and she hit her head on the wall of my room and slumped.

Unconfirmed reports said the Chief Detail to the Governor was among those wounded.

According to eye witnesses, the tipper lorry, ran into the governor’s convoy, hitting the SUV behind Oshiomhole’s car, leading to a multiple crash involving the back up vehicle, the press bus and the Hilux car carrying the Chief Press Secretary, Peter Okhiria.

Lagos Doctors In Warning Strike

Activities in Lagos General Hospitals will be paralysed tomorrow as doctors in public hospitals begin a three-day warning strike to demand for the implementation of the agreement they reached with the Lagos State Government last year.

However, eminent Lagosians and human rights activists have appealed to the doctors to shelve the strike and embrace dialogue so that patients in the state’s hospitals would not bear the brunt.

The doctors, under the aegis of the Medical Guild, said the state government had failed to implement a downward review of excessive taxation and the Consolidated Medical Salary Scale Structure, CONMESS, approved for them by the Federal Government last year, saying that the warning strike would end on Friday.

The doctors rose from its congress and decided to embark on the strike, after which they would embark on total strike by the end of this month, saying that they could no longer bear government’s insensitivity.

Chairman, Medical Guild, Dr Olumuyiwa Odusote said the doctors had held several meetings with the government on the issue and that nothing had been done about it since the last one year.

Prominent Lagosians, including monarchs, political leaders and clerics yesterday pleaded with resident doctors in Lagos State to shelve their strike in the interest of stakeholders in the health sector.

Human right groups condemned the planned industrial action, saying that it is in bad faith, unpatriotic and unfortunate.

Humanity Services Project, HSP, led by Comrade Linus Okoroji, berated the doctors for a shortfall in sensitivity, wondering why medical practitioners were embarking on strike based an ongoing agreement with the government.

He also revisited the on-going debate on true federalism, claiming that it was illogical for state doctors to use the condition of service of doctors in the Federal Civil Service as the yardstick for agitations for welfare at the state level.

On its part, the Committee for the Protection of Peoples Mandate, CPPM, asked the aggrieved doctors to embrace dialogue in the interest of industrial peace in the state.

Its Executive Chairman, Mr. Nelson Ekujumi, said: “It is the grass that suffers. The common man cannot afford the services of private doctors. That is why we are calling on the doctors to shelve the strike and embrace dialogue”.
Okoroji, in a statement, said: “The Governing Board of Humanity Services Project (HSP) condemns the contemplated warning and incessant strike actions by Lagos State Doctors. HSP is alarmed about the news that the Lagos State doctors are spoiling to embark on a warning strike from Wednesday, April 11, 2012, just two days after the Easter break. This is very insensitive, unfortunate and condemnable”.

He said the group is also sad that “the contemplated action is an agitation against unimplemented agreement with Lagos State Government”.

Okoroji added: “We have restrained ourselves from issuing statements on previous strikes by Lagos State doctors. HSP is most disturbed that the agitations by doctors all the time are based on their selfish and personal interests, which is limited to conditions of service.

“HSP agrees that doctors, whose profession play a very vital role in saving human life, should be properly remunerated. But, it is unfair when doctors whose responsibilities revolve around saving of lives, take undue advantage of their most essential responsibility to impede government and society. Lagos State doctors are among the best remunerated among their contemporaries throughout Nigeria.

“HSP will like to draw attention of the Lagos State doctors to the real fact that, those who will be adversely affected by any strike whatsoever are the poor Lagosians. Is it fair to punish the people who are already in agony?

“We condemn in its entirety the contemplated strike by the doctors. It is important for the doctors to note that their services and responsibility to humanity are very essential, critical and anointed by God.”

According to him, “they must not under any guise jeopardise people’s access to their services. This must be against their professional ethics. They must look for other civilised means to resolve their differences with the government without jeopardising people’s access to their services. It should not be heard that doctors, who essentially must save life after God, should go on strike.”

Goodluck Jonathan Commission School For Alimajiri's (Street Kids)

President Goodluck Jonathan said in his visit to Sokoto today Tuesday that his administration was committed to providing quality education for the 9.5 million street children, known as Almajiri, usually products of Quranic schools, but left to wander the streets by their teachers.

Jonathan stated this at the inauguration of the first Federal Government-owned Almajiri Model Boarding School, Gagi in Sokoto metropolis.
The President said that the school was built for the Almajiri

as part of his administration’s determined effort to provide equal access to education for all Nigerian children. He recalled that a study conducted by the Ministerial Committee on Almajiri Education in 2010 revealed that there were 9.5 million Almajirai in Nigeria.

Out of the number, the President said that the North-West geo-political zone alone accounted for almost five million, that is more than 60 per cent of the total population of the Almajirai nationwide.

“The fact that the majority of these children do not attend conventional basic education schools makes the situation quite worrisome. Our administration believes that the time has come for the nation to build on the moral foundations of the traditional school system.

“By providing the Almajirai with conventional knowledge and skills that will enable them fully realise their creative and productive potentials,” he said.

Jonathan said he subsequently directed the Minister of Education, Prof. Ruqqyyat Rufai, to liaise with the state governments and work out, the best approach for providing knowledge and skills for the youths.

“The Federal Government had pledged that every year for four years, that it will construct one hundred Almajirai schools to bring the total number of the schools to 400 nationwide. It is noteworthy that under this arrangement, the Federal Government has so far constructed 35 of such model schools.

“States with large populations of Almajirai will have both the boarding and day schools. Each school is equipped with a basic science laboratory, a computer room, vocational education workshop and a library.

Similarly, textbooks aligned to the national curriculum have been produced and teachers will be trained in line with the national policy on education and the national curriculum. The commissioning of the first model school in Sokoto today is only a precursor to the commissioning of other such schools, including the Day School located in Tambuwal town, which shall commence shortly,” the president said.

In addition to this, he said that additional support to states for the Almajirai education project was being provided through the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC),

Corroborating the president’s position, Rufai said UBEC had constructed 51 Almajiri schools, boarding and day across the country.

The minister said that the UBEC intervention was to construct and thereafter hand over the schools to State Universal Basic Education Board to manage.

She said that the commission would also monitor the schools on a continuous basis to ensure compliance with minimum academic standards for basic education.

On the operations of the schools, Rufai said that the Federal Government would provide funds for the construction and equipment of the model schools.

She said that the Federal Government would also provide. textbooks and capacity-building for teachers.

The states, according to the minister, will be fully responsible for managing the schools, as well as the construction of additional schools in the long run in order to achieve the desired impact.

The minister said that the curriculum ran in the school should enable the students to continue their education beyond basic education in conventional secondary school and tertiary institutions.

She said that in case the students terminated at the basic level, the curriculum should also enable them to have acquired literacy and conventional skill to broaden their horizon. It will also enable them to be useful to themselves and the entire society
